Before MN8 was a skincare brand, it was a decision

It starts on a run-down dairy farm on Millbrook Road in Waipu, Northland. Four years ago, two families took on that land with a plan to restore what farming had stripped out of it. The soil was compacted, marginal, choked with weeds. Conventional agriculture had left its mark: depleted soil, disrupted ecosystems, and earth that had forgotten how to thrive.

But we saw potential. We saw what this land could become with time, care, and regenerative practices.

Native bush went back in along the boundaries. Then came seven hectares of mānuka, planted by hand across what used to be paddocks. That patch of degraded farmland is now home to one of the only regeneratively grown mānuka plantations in New Zealand. Every bottle of MN8 starts there.

The Question That Started Everything

Once the mānuka was in the ground, the real question showed up: how do you get everything out of it without destroying it in the process?

Most extraction methods rely on heat, and heat is exactly what breaks down the compounds that make mānuka worth growing in the first place. So the farm invested in a state-of-the-art supercritical CO₂ extraction facility, built right there on site. No trucking leaf across the country. No handing the process to someone else. Every step from soil to extract happens on that land, by the same people who planted it.

Why Farming Method Changes Everything

The way plants are grown fundamentally alters their chemical composition, nutrient density, and healing potential. Stressed, chemically-managed land produces stressed, chemically-dependent plants with compromised bioactive profiles. Regenerative farming flips this equation entirely.

On our farm, we work with natural systems rather than against them:

• No synthetic sprays or fertilizers that disrupt soil microbiomes and plant chemistry
• Diverse grazing patterns with our organic flock of sheep that naturally fertilize and aerate the soil
• Polyculture plantings that support biodiversity and create resilient ecosystems
• Soil building practices that sequester carbon and enhance microbial diversity
• Minimal harvest schedules that allow plants to fully develop their protective compounds

When mānuka grows in these conditions, it produces higher concentrations of triketones for antimicrobial and barrier repair properties, more complex flavonoid profiles for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, enhanced enzyme activity that supports cellular regeneration, richer polyphenol content, and better bioavailability because the plant's natural co-factors stay intact.

This enhanced chemistry is what makes our cold CO₂ extraction so powerful. We're not just preserving any mānuka compounds. We're preserving the superior compounds that only develop in regenerative conditions.

How It Came Together
